Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see an Osteopath?
No, an Osteopath is a primary health care practitioner, no referral is needed
What is the difference between Osteopathy, Chiropractic and Physiotherapy?
There are several similarities between the three professions, however the main differences are found in the principles of treatments applied.
Osteopathy recognizes the important link between the bodys structure and the way the body functions. We focus on the whole body - skeleton, joints,
muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs, and how these systems function as a holistic unit. Injury or problems with one
area of the body can and usually does have effects on other parts of the body.
Osteopathy, unlike some other manipulative treatments, aims not only to treat the symptoms of the problem, but the cause behind the problem.
Osteopathy uses a wide range of techniques including mobilization, massage, pressure and stretching.
Is Osteopathy safe?
When people ask this question they usually have manipulation in mind. Osteopathy has a gentle approach to manipulation precisely measuring a joints release point and applying only the minimum external force necessary. Patients may experience mild discomfort from joint manipulation but this should pass quickly. Joint manipulation is just one of a wide range of techniques and treatment approaches that osteopaths use.
How long do the appointments take?
Usually the first consultation is about 45 minutes, this allows us to complete a comprehensive case history of your symptoms, as well as your
lifestyle and diet. Following treatments take around half an hour.
During the initial consultation we will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment plan, estimating the likely number of sessions needed to
treat your condition effectively.
How many treatments will I need?
As everyones body is different, results from osteopathic treatment can vary. Factors affecting the treatment response include the severity of the condition, what part of the body is affected, how long you have had the problem and any underlying medical history. Factors such as posture, compliance with exercises and frequency of treatment can also directly affect your recovery.
Is Osteopathic treatment claimable under Workcover or Veterans Affairs?
Yes, you must be able to provide details of your Workcover claim number and details for your case and the name of the contact person you were
given from the insurer.
Patients who are covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs must first obtain a referral from their General Practitioner made out to the Osteopath.
Can I claim my Osteopathic treatment on Private Health Insurance or Medicare?
Private health cover rebates can be done on the spot (HICAPS,) TAC and workcover approved. Most Private Health Insurance with extras or axillary cover a portion of treatment cost. Medicare does not cover Osteopathic treatment unless you are under an Enhanced Primary Care (ECP) plan organised by your General Practitioner.
